Measuring Instructions for Your Roman Shades
Before you place your order for Roman Shades, it's vital that you first accurately measure your window opening and provide Blindster with the height and width of the area you wish to cover.
Because there are two distinct mounting options, you must decide how you will install your new shade to get the correct measurements and dimensions.
INSIDE MOUNT BLINDS
Inside mount blinds fit inside the window frame and provide a sleek, clean, and built-in look that preserves the appearance of woodwork and molding.
If you plan on mounting your blinds inside your window frames, keep the following tips in mind:
- Entire shade fits inside window frame without any overlap.
- Gives window and shade a sleek, clean, and built-in appearance.
- Preserves appearance of original or intricate woodwork on window frame.
- Requires 1 1/4" minimum depth (1" for Super Value) and 2" for top down/bottom up or continuous loop.
- Requires 1 1/2" minimum depth (1 1/4" for Super Value) for flush inside mount, 2 1/4" for top down/bottom up or continuous loop.
- Use outside mount option if window frame isn't deep enough to support this installation.
Measuring Inside Mount Blinds
If you've decided to install your new shade inside your window frame, follow the instructions below to properly measure the window and provide the measurements to Blindster when you place your order:
- Measure the width of your window opening in 3 places - top, middle and bottom. Record the most narrow of your 3 measurements to the nearest 1/8". If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8". This is the width you will order.

The factory will deduct approx. 1/4" from the width you order to allow space for proper operation. - Measure the inside height of the window in three separate places: left, middle, and right. Record the largest of the 3 measurements. Use this height when placing your order with Blindster.

OUTSIDE MOUNT BLINDS
Outside mount blinds are perfect for windows that are too shallow to support the installation of inside mount blinds. They can be mounted to the wall, ceiling, or frame/molding around the window and are often used to make windows appear larger.
Here are a few important facts to know about outside mount blinds:
- Best option if window frame depth isn't sufficient for inside mount installation.
- Allows you to mount shade to wall, ceiling, or molding surrounding the window.
- Increases apparent size of window and can hide unattractive windows or woodwork.
- No minimum depth requirements for installation.
- Requires at least 1 1/2" flat area on mounting surface for secure installation. Use measured area of mounting surface when measuring for ordering dimensions.
- Note that headrails for outside mount shades with top down/bottom up or continuous loop options are 1" wider than ordered width.
Measuring Outside Mount Blinds
Follow the instructions below to get the proper measurements for your shade if you're planning on installing it outside of your window frame:
- Measure the width of the area you want to cover from outside edge to outside edge. This is the width you should order. The shade will be made to the exact size you specify.

- Measure the height of the area you want to cover from outside edge to outside edge. This is the height you should order. There are no height deductions, the shade will be made to the height you order. Note: Headrails for outside mount shades with Top Down/Bottom Up or Continuous Cord Loop Options will be 1" wider than the width ordered (fabric is made to the ordered width).
